Let the Feast begin!

Tickets are now on sale for the third annual Farmers' Feast. This event connects some of Manitoba's best chefs with Manitoba's farmers, to create a magical evening of local food-tasting under the market canopies. You will taste the very best of Manitoba, from chefs, brewers, farmers and food artisans. Tickets are available through the Farmers' Feast website, or by visiting the Information Booth at the market on Saturdays.

Yoga on the Grass

This Saturday, August 13th, bring your yoga mat, and join Rae and Graham on the grass at the market for a morning yoga class! They have cycled from New York, to Toronto, below the Great Lakes to Minneapolis, and now to Winnipeg! They will be in the city for just a few days, and then will continue from here to cross Canada. Their mission is to teach yoga and learn about sustainable agriculture. You can also visit their blog at www.growyogafarm.org. Please offer them a small donation for the class.

Herbs, Herbs, Herbs

There are so many great, fresh herbs available at the market right now. Here are some tips for buying, storing and enjoying those fragrant, flavourful herbs as long as possible.

1. Choose herbs that appear fresh, with leaves that are vibrantly coloured, without brown spots.
2. Their scent should be strong and fresh-smelling.
3. Refrigerate herbs to help them last a few days longer: Flat leaves or small stems can be gently wrapped in a damp paper towel and then sealed in a plastic bag. If you have larger quantities or for bigger herbs, like a bunch of basil, stand them upright in a glass filled with water before refrigerating.
4. When cooking with fresh herbs add them at the end so the heat doesn't destroy their flavour.
5. Use herbs to liven up cocktails or non-alcoholic drinks at your next party.
6. Add lavender to home-made iced tea; a perfect, refreshing cold drink for an afternoon of gardening or lazing about.

Herbal Iced Soda
Adapted by City Market in Edmonton from a recipe in Martha Stewart Living Magazine, August 2011
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 ounce fresh herbs (such as basil, lemon balm, mint, tarragon or thyme)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Ice, for serving
  • Sparkling water or club soda, for serving
Directions
Put sugar and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and add herbs. Cover and let cool completely. Strain and serve over ice with sparkling water or club soda and a fresh sprig of herbs.

And then the bees said Bzzzzzzz ...

The fresh season of Manitoba honey is upon us, too. To keep these drinks really local, skip the sugar, and instead make a honey syrup to sweeten your drinks. Simply take1 part honey and one part water. Warm until the honey is dissolved in the water. Cover and cool. Add to taste.
